  • David & Melissa's Wedding Inspired Cali Trip

Has it really been 10 weeks since our last xanga entry?!  I guess life got out of control and then I got out of the habit.  At the end of May we traveled to California for David & Melissa's wedding.  We spent a couple days at Disneyland, of course, went to the beach, and had a wonderful time with family and friends.  Here are photos from our trip. Enjoy!

This time, instead of cookie-plastered cheeks, Lizzy fell asleep drawing.  Home safe and sound!

  • Outpatient Surgery

A visit to the dentist one month ago revealed that Lizzy's baby teeth came in almost devoid of enamel.  As a result a large number of her young little teeth have advance cavities.  For liability reasons, dentists no longer treat young children in office - instead the dental work has to be done in the OR at the hospital ($$$).  Today was the soonest they could fit her in.

    A fun month!

  • Double Pneumonia

Katrina has been sick for a couple of weeks now and after hitting a temperature of 105 we finally took her into the doctor.  The diagnosis is double pneumonia.  It appears to be bacterial so she'll be on anti-biotics and stay the night in the hospital.  Should be markedly improved by the morning!

  • The Dreaded Gombu

In late February our family caught the respiratory illness that seemed to overtake all of Utah.  It lasted a good two weeks and pretty much brought our house to a standstill.  We thought we were out of the woods, but Saturday influenza struck and we've been in a tailspin since.  Pretty much the whole family except for Gary has spent the last five days in bed.  Gary taught a lesson at church on Sunday but skipped out on everything else including his leadership meetings.  Georgianna and Joseph are now on the mend but Liesl, Katrina and Lizzy are having a rough time of it.  Lizzy has kept up her parents through much of the night all week and we're pretty much zombies at this point.

In other news, our local Bishop's Storehouse is completely out of wheat and doesn't expect any more till the fall, assuming there's a good harvest.  We were watching the news the other night and they talked about a 400% increase in wheat prices.  Lehi Roller Mills was interviewed and they said their cost had gone from $5 per unit to $18 per unit.  Pretty amazing!

  • Time for an update!  Way too much to report, so y'all just get the SHORT version, but with photo illustrations (that's the best part anyway!)

First off, I've been on a major food storage thing lately.  I've always tried to do my food storage, but this past month I've felt like it was time to REALLY get things in order.  It's been on my mind constantly day and night.  We're getting closer but it takes time to find the best prices, find what we'll use, buy it, get it home, can or bucket it, label and inventory then find a home for it.  It's been pretty darn consuming but I'm glad to be getting closer to my goals.  It's kinda freaky seeing how prices on things have gone up, up, up over the past 5 years.  I have a weird memory for numbers so I really notice when prices change.  Wheat has gone through the roof, and with no end in sight it looks to keep going up.  I'm glad we can still get it through the bishop's storehouse for so much less than the general market.  Anyway-here are some shots of the progress:

    food storage1     food storage buckets

Lizzy did not want to be set down for the bucket shot.  She was sick at the time (we've all had the plague this month) so she cries and gags herself to get me to hold her.  It works because holding her is easier than cleaning up puke.

I've also been learning to make my own sourdough bread.  I love the stuff and other than taking a long time to do the whole process (24 hours) it is pretty simple.  Her's my first beautiful loaves!

Now for animal news.  The chickens are finally regrowing their feathers.   They had mites and it took 2 rounds of dusting to kick the bitty beasts.  Here's a lovely shot of dad doing the dirty work:

    chicken bum

Remember the nursing kitty thing?  I snapped a shot just for your enjoyment.  And a shot of Lizzy and Mittens hanging out in the dryer together.  I can't explain why they are there together- use your imagination!

What else did we do this month?  I already mentioned that we conquered the plague plus a different stomach virus- oh, and alongside food storage I've been making scenery for a Shakespeare play.   The scenery assignment has caused a little bitterness on my part as Joseph isn't even in the show, but I'll get over it.  While I've been out in the garage hammering and painting the kids were often left inside to do as they pleased.  Fortunately, their efforts are cute and creative and involve each other.  Laundry baskets are almost always involved.  Here are some samples:

When the weather has been nice the kids have played outside on their bikes.  Lizzy's favorite thing is to blow bubbles:  bubble gals  Here's a close-up:  bubbles closeup

Okay, we also  had Valentines day.  There are some awesome shots from that but I'm hoping Gary will make a video of it all.  Cross you fingers he can swing it.  Jacob also had a birthday- which will also have to wait to be recorded until video time.  That's what Gary gets for being so good at video making, we won't settle for anything less!  Okay, here's one valentines shot of Lizzy in the buff with a rose.  And with Jacob turning 8 he is now a cub scout.  Growing up they are!

    Rose LIzzy      new scout

Gary is working so hard I think I'd loose my marbles if I were him.  He seems to be holding up well however.  Sometimes (okay, most of the time) I wish the impact on our family was a little lighter.  C'est la vie.

That's about all I can swing at present.  Here's 2 parting shots,  Lizzy making faces in the mirror and Gianna donning a princess crown she earned.

    California here we went!

Although it was only two weeks ago it sure seems like months have passed!  But we did travel West and had a fabulous fast trip.  Here are some highlights of the place we called home and our happy visit back there:

    zoo sign

Stop #1 was to the LA Zoo.  Gianna has no memory of a Zoo, neither does Lizzy of course.  We thought it would be a fun family event.  So we left Cedar City before the sun rose (-20 with windchill or something ubsurd like that) and were happily gazing at gorilla's by early afternoon (mid 60's).

         zoo goat     stroller

All the kids got to brush some pampered goats.  Lizzy LOVES being in her stroller.  She'd pitch a fit whenever Gianna tried to sneak a turn.

Bobble headed kids looking at gophers and Mum n Pops at the pretty pink flamingoes.  It was a fun time (a little pricey considering 1/2 of the zoo was under construction but of course they don't tell you that before you enter.  Hmmm.)

    traffic

Here is something we DON'T miss!

       ruthwood

But here is something WE DO!!!

The place looked pretty good, pretty occupied too.  Mom's flowers are O-O-C.

    grass!

When we pulled into Camarillo around dinner time the kids dove onto the grass, with tears in their eyes crying out "home sweet home" or something like that .

    pasta

Presto Pasta is a favorite with our family.

    skeel

And a stop at our old home on Skeel Drive.  The lawn looks terrible- hard to imagine after all the sweat and tears we put into it.  But that's a California lawn for you.  The new owners have made the yard their own and have relocated many of the existing plants.  I'm just glad it hasn't gone to pot.  We were tempted to reach over the wall and snag some oranges- but we didn't succumb.   That old house sure has afforded us many a new opportunity since its providential sellling.  We've been so blessed....

        bookstore

The Camarillo bookstore I love so well was moved to the new Library campus.  It's all so terribly beautiful.  I'd move back just for the library.  The gal who runs the bookstore still knows me by name and sent me home with a huge box of goods (About $1000 worth of school/teaching stuff) complimentary.  Of course we bought boxes and boxes of other books to fill Gary's office shelves and home shelves as well.  It was such fun.  Here's a shot of us with our cart full of books. Is it possible to have too many books?  Nah, unless it's moving day of course and you are in the local Elders Quorum.  Well, that was Friday for you.  We stayed in a creepy cheap hotel with crawling carpet- I hope to never repeat the experience.  We were trying to pinch a penny.  Not advisable.  Now, on to Saturday!

    beach car

We started the day with a trip on PCH.  It was so GORGEOUS!!  I know the shot out the car window does NOT do justice.

Leo Carrillo was on the docket.  Although the tide was not at it's lowest, it was still low enough to afford some "sights" to sea, I mean see.

The kids are checking out the view and finding some goods too.  Gary and I each found some clam shells freshly ate out.  Both shells were still attached with soft tissue but no guts were left.  Shucks.

That's a shot of my happy find.  Isn't this so sweet with Lizzy?  She liked the beach I think.  She was a good sport about it anyway.

This next series of shots needs some narration.  We were up on rocks looking at starfish and other creatures when Gary thought it would be fun to catch some big wave shots.  He got in position on LOWER ground than the rest of us.  He got the said shots but midway through realized he was in a more precarious perch than the rest of us.  He and Lizzy were soaked.  We're just lucky they weren't swept out to sea.

She looks a little concerned, doen't she?  With good reason too!

This next shot is my all time favorite.  Gary is so clever with the camera!!!

    arneill         park car ride

We grabbed lunch back in Camarillo and hit the parks.  Throughout our whole living in Camarillo folks in the ward would call us the Arneill's due to a major road in town with the said name.  We just smiled and did't worry about it.  We always knew they were talking to/about us anyhow!  Speaking of the ward, we went to church on Sunday to the Camarillo 1st ward.  Apparently so many people moved out of the ward that the leadership is feeling the pinch- or something like that.  When we walked in the building our old ward family made quite a fuss, including Dean Sonnenberg who bowed down to lick out shoes.  He is such a ham.  We felt the love anyhow.   Now, back to the parks.... the kids played while Gary worked on his talk.  The whole reason we went down for these short 3 days was because a former student from the Academy we ran decided to be baptized.  He asked Gary to give a talk.  We decided to make a quick trip of it and we're so glad we did.  Sitting in the sun and looking at the flowers in bloom while the kids played for a couple of hours was the best therapy we've had in a LOOOONG time.  It was so rejuvinating to soak some rays in a familiar and loved place.  The kids were in heaven too. They love their old parks!!!

This is Dad and Devin after the baptism.  Jacob had a 'girlfriend' at our old school.  She's grown up now but still  gave her little fan a big squeeze!!!  The baptism was great and visiting with the old Academy crew afterwards was a bit like going home.  Heaven is going to be great, isn't it?

Dad n Devin     jacob and anna

Now, some random shots on the way home.  Lizzy is a better traveller thanks to a t.v. system and plenty of treats to stuff her face with.  Just look at her chocolate painting and face pasting.  Lovely, eh?

That's it for a trip update.  I don't think Gary's going to be doing an entry any time in the near future as his is sooooooo swamped at work.  So, you're stuck with me until he gets back to a reasonable schedule.  Until next time, ta ta.

  • So, we got a new computer.  Gary has of course installed everything necessary on in, but the operating system is Vista and it's taking me awhile to figure all that out.  Bottom line is that I can't figure out where our pictures are nor can I find what I need to download the millions of shots we have collected since our last entry in early December.   CONSEQUENTLY, you are stuck with text today!  For those of you who are visual people, just come back later when we can display full color blow by blows!

The month of December went by in a very happy blurr for our family.  Enough social outing and innings to keep everyone happy, lots of baking and making of goods to keep our pants fitting snug.  The kids of course went way above and beyond to make or purchase plenty of presents for each other.  A hightlight this year was Katrina's homemade blocks with bells in them for Lizzy.  She spent hours on them and thankfully Lizzy loves them!  All these goods made for quite a full car as we spent Christmas in Cache Valley with the Arnell crew.   When the spread was put out on Christmas Eve it was quite the sight to behold!  Christmas morning was a bit interesting as we mixed different families along with their traditions into one- but we wouldn't have changed a thing about it.  It was chaotic but wonderful nonetheless.  Katrina received a kitten for Christmas which totally made her whole year!  Aunt Serra did a fabulous job picking the feline- he is honestly the perfect kitten.  We had a great week visiting, playing with Mittens the kitten and cousins alike, sledding, dodging Nerf bullets, and dodging the flu (partially successful in all events).   With Mom and Dad not being moved in yet, all of the meals were frozen or take out.  That was certainlly a change for this family but the ease of preparation was quite the perk.  I think we may have caught onto something with that new groove.   All good things must come to an end however and after a few short days we loaded up and headed back to Cedar.  We left just after noon and after a few visiting and eating stops arrived home around 9.  Mittens spent the whole journey in a box with litter/food/water/blanket.  Except for the smell of the litter, we hardly even noticed we traveled home with one extra (furry) body.

Lucky (our dog) immediately decided that Mitten's was HIS Christmas present.  He has not since the day we arrived home left the kitten alone for a moment.  They sleep together, play together and eat one anothers food (Mittens tries to "eat" from Lucky's underbelly each night but has found such efforts to be fruitless.  He still keeps trying however and Lucky doesn't mind the attention one bit.  Strange.)  Since we're talking of animals anyhow I suppose a chicken update is due.  We hire a teenager across the street to care for the brood when we go out of town which is really nice to be able to do.  We haven't lost a hen in awhile and now that the first shock of winter is over we are back to getting 12-16 eggs a day (not bad for winter.)  We've determined that when we let that old stray Rooster into our coup, he brought mites with him.  He's had evidence of them for some time and now it's spreading to other hens.  Gary will diligently hang each hen upside down this weekend and give each one a bottom dusting with the appropriate powders.  This should clear the problem up quickly.  Wouldn't you all like to come help with that one?

Enough on animals- unless of couse our kids fall under that same catagory .  There are days I fear they do, but for the most part they are quite civilized.  Joseph is changing so fast it is hard to keep up with.  He is growing more studious, more helpful, more responsible and more capable.  I've decided he is already smarter than I am (in certain areas ONLY ) as each week in viola lessons he blows me away with his mathematical abilities.  He totally gets the code.  His instructor is helping him develop perfect pitch which I am thrilled about and he is concerned about, "Mom, my voice doesn't always make the sound I tell it to.  Sometimes it comes out all scratchy or it cracks."  He'll get over that in a year or so I suppose.

Katrina has hit an academic or cognitive milestone as well.  I can see things clicking in her head with her studies and it is such a joy (and sometimes relief) to see it happen.  I really love being a teacher to these kids and am gaining more confidence that kids learn naturally when given the right environment and tools.  She is sooo helpful with Lizzy.  I'd be lost without her cheerful service and good deeds.

Jacob is fast approaching his baptism date.   He has a heart of gold and is working to have his exterior match it.  Yes, nose picking and hands in his pants are still issues but he is finally making a conscientious effort to overcome these social stumbling blocks!  He is a delight.

Georgie is still the dance maniac.   I think I'm going to finally bite the bullet and get her into lessons.  I'm just hesitant to add one  more thing the the schedule.  She'd love it so much however so we'll see.  This imaginative and dramatic gal makes quipes throughout the day such as "How romantic!" and "My true love!"  You can guess where her brain waves run.  She still changes her clothes way too many times per day but at least she does it in themes.  Today the theme is swimsuits and she's now on her fourth one.  Laundry days are delightlful for me.

Lizzy is the climbing crazy kid.  She loves to climb onto the kitchen table in particular and do little dances.  If something is left on the table she politely cleans up before her jigs.  Unfortuanely this is not always appreciated, especially when broken dishes & fresh cracked eggs lie on the floor thanks to her efforts.  C'est dommage!  She has also taken to climbing onto the top bunk in  Joseph's room where she triumphantly crows until someone finds her.  Lizzy also is a major fan of the kitten.  She picks him up and carries him all over the place at every angle imaginable.  That sweet kitten just takes it all without a meow or scratch.  Such a perfect kitten!  Lizzy has also found new pleasure in dropping anything made of cloth down the laundry chute.  Last week she emptied my whole sewing bin.  Once again, laundry days are a blast (cough).

Gary is busy as ever with his administrative responsiblities.  I squeaked a little recently about the encroachment on the dinner hour and he has since made Herculean efforts to be home in a more timely fashion.  I know it's hard on him to have so many things to do- but we sure appreciate getting a piece of him each evening.   He will also start teaching the teacher development course in church each week which will be interesting as Lizzy still hates nursery and I'm in primary up to my armpits.  He want to do it however so we'll make it work. We are planning a trip to Camarillo next week as one of his former students will be baptized and has asked for "one more lesson from Brother Arnell"  (i.e. the Holy Ghost talk.)  The kids are dying to go see the old stomping grounds so the family will make the quick trip together.   Should be a good trip and believe it or not we will NOT be stopping in Disneyland!  Wowzers, miracles happen.

As for me- I still enjoy reading a good book when I can (takes awhile to finish however as bathroom reading seems to be my only real break).  I'm working on sewing new drapes downstairs to add more color to the rooms, I'm busy with teaching the kids of course which includes leading clubs for both Katrina and Jacob and I just learned how to make sourdough bread!   This was way fun for me as I LOVE sourdough.  A friend bought me some real San Francisco starter so the taste is authentic.  And finally, I'm still enjoying the benefits of adding Isagenix into my diet.  Of all the diet and nutritional adjustments and changes I've ever made this one has been the most impactful.  I feel so different.  It is so wonderful to actually feel more health flowing in my veins.  I don't know how else to describe it.  I'm so grateful  for the  programs though and how much more vital I am feeling.  I hope that after a length of time on the foods my immune system will have had a total overhaul.  Maybe then I can not be the first one to get everything!

That's a verbal nutshell.  Once we get the photos loaded I know there will be a million other things to record. Until then ta-ta!

  • Merry Christmas!

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!  Distance makes it hard to keep in frequent contact with everyone we care about.  This website is our attempt at recording our goings-on and keep in touch.  Our Christmas card (arriving soon at a mailbox near you!) gave a quick peek into the goings-on of the Cedar City Arnells in 2007.  Feel free to scroll through these pages to get more of the gory details!

We started out 2007 by welcoming home Gary's brother David from an LDS mission to Florida and record snowfall (for Cedar City anyway). 2007 brought big changes to our family on other fronts as well.  We increased our family size five fold.  Our "flock" size would be more accurate.  This spring we purchased 28 or so little chicks via mail order and they arrived one day old at our local post office.  Gary's parents returned from an LDS mission to Texas just in time to help us build a poultry paradise, our very own "henitentery".  We now get between 14 and 20 eggs daily.  The kids care for the animals daily and do brisk business selling the eggs to neighboors or trading them for things like fresh, raw milk from a local 12 year old entrepreneur who has his own cow.

Elizabeth, who joined us in 2006, turns 18 months old the week of Christmas and is now walking and talking, sort of.  Tonight she actually did a passable rendition of Happy Birthday.  She is strong-willed and delightful.  She loves our dog, Lucky, and he puts up with her somewhat violent attempts at affection.  Can't believe she's growing up so fast!

Georgianna turned four this year.  She leaps, prances and twirls about all day and only recently stopped saying at meal prayer times (where we all hold hands) "we just made a hole with the bugs and the leaves!"

Jacob turned seven this year and is our wonderful, guileless boy.  We look forward to his baptism in just a few short months!

Katrina is ten years old and played Scout in a local rendition of the court scene of To Kill a Mockingbird.  She also sewed her own dress and enjoys participating in her local Young Stateswoman Society activities.

Joseph started out the year with a doozy of a snow campout.  He moved from childhood to young manhood when he turned twelve and was ordained a deacon.  Since then he has done temple baptisms twice and spoken in sacrament meeting.  He even finished first in his scout troop's 50-mile bike ride.

Liesl continues to serve in the ward as the Primary Chorister and to make our house a home and lead our children in their education.  You can check out a few highlights herehere, here and here.

Gary continues to serve as the Ward Executive Secretary and in September accepted a position as the Vice President of Administration at George Wythe College.

A highlight for Gary and Liesl was a black tie Gala held in Salt Lake City this past May.  Perhaps our favorite times of all were when we got to spend it with family.

As a family, we enjoyed bike rides and trips to Snowbird, Yankee Meadows and hiking in Cedar CanyonBryce Canyon and Zion National Park.  This summer we enjoyed a weekend in Cache Valley with many good friends from Camarillo who have, like us, moved east to Utah and Idaho.  And, of course, we went to Disneyland, again, again, and again.  A new vehicle was purchased to help us with the Utah winters and and future growth in family numbers (no announcement here ).

May you have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!!!

And as for Giann's prayer, "Thank Thee for the food Mommy has lovingly prepared for us."  Brilliant, eh?
