GWU Gala 2009
George Wythe University
2009 Annual Fundraising Gala
Utah State Capitol, Salt Lake City, UT – May 30, 2009
Over 400 people gathered for the event. Dinner under the rotunda. The location was unbeatable. Fun!
In an effort to save pennies Liesl got her hair done at the local beauty college in Cedar. The gals working on her nails fretted “I hate it when my hands get shaky!” The supposed “advanced” student working on Liesl’s hair however was a complete disaster. Liesl called me in tears on her way up to SLC. David and Barbara tried valiantly to find a hairdresser in their area open and available on a late Saturday afternoon but to no avail. Instead, the Brower girls hooked Liesl up with all their hairwizardry equipment – after hooking me up with some tasty Brower chicken!
Off to the gala!
After attending a VIP reception with Glenn Beck we snooped around before things got started.
Culinary Crafts did the catering. Cool table settings!
The evening was billed as a celebration of the statesmanship of the founding fathers. GWU students recite the Declaration of Independence from heart in a dramatic rendition. Very moving.
A friend of mine and a TJEd mom, deemed by the U.K.’s reality show “World’s Strictest Parents” to be, well, one of the world’s strictest parents, hosted two British teens for a week that happened to fall the week of the gala. I asked the teens, Julie and Sebastian, how they qualified to be on the show and they said they had to audition and the show picked the “biggest hooligans.” They came to the dinner along with the camera crew and we happened to be at the same table. Liesl and I had to sign waivers in case they used footage of us. It was fun talking to the teens because they really seemed to have had a turn around experience with the “Cork” family. They had been having fun for the first time, it seems, without the normally requisite drinking, drugs, immorality, etc. The young lady in blue, 17yo with a nine month old daughter, said she wanted to become a lady. I was going to identify my friend by name but apparently the show uses aliases and so she will rename nameless! I believe the episode will air on June 6 on CMT. Too bad we don’t have cable!
The capitol rotunda is spectacular! An amazing evening!

looked like a beautiful event. This may be the beginning of your future as a star. I wonder if youtube would have the show? You both, as usual, looked fabulous.
Love the magnolia background, they are one of my favorite flowers-heavenly smell. What a beautiful location for the event!–maren
I can’t remember the link but Brian knows of a website that you can watch anything online.
Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the Gala… Good, Good Read! Thanks so much. I want to see a full length photo of Liesls dress. I got a lump in my throat just thinking about all those kids standing and reciting the Declaration of Independence. AND I am glad the rascal girls got a taste of what “the good life” really is. I hope they remember. mom
Yeah, I still want to know why a 17 year old mother travels with a tiara? What is up with that?
@ Gary, we did have a hair dresser lined up, the governor’s sister! Liesl just had visions of how she was going to save it herself by then!
@Jan, I think he looks like he may not be, but I believe Sebastian to be male.
