  • Cutting Wood

Saturday morning Joseph and I joined Russ Clarke and Brian & Brandon Bairett to cut wood up on the mountain.  Kalen Langstrom and his son showed up a couple hours later.  We ended up bringing four cords of wood down the mountain and today I am very sore.  Good times, nevertheless!

Russ makes the initial notch in the tree while our resident expert, Brian Bairett looks on.  Last year we brought pine off the mountain.  This year we did quaking aspen entirely, choosing only dead trees of course.  The nice thing about aspen is that, unlike pine, there are very few branches to cut off the trunk.

We cut down 8 or 9 trees in all and then cut them into 14-18 foot chunks.

Russ watches on as Brian drags two trees (40-50 feet long each) down the hill.  Dragging the logging chain up and down the hill was quite the tiring exercise, but better than hauling wood!

This picture didn't turn out as easy to see as I would have liked.  It is a still from the video below.  When the tree hits the ground all the bark flys off.  Another benefit!  Some of the falls were pretty spectacular.

  • Keep those home fires burning. So aspen doesn't spit as it burns?  I didn't know that.  Looks like a lot of work to me. .. But the fires will be great!  mom

  • So you take the time to change your look but not to update....
